While store shelves are full of brightly-colored backpacks and binders today, a month from now those items will be history, replaced with everything Halloween orange and black, from candy to costumes. If any month of the year reminds us to think ahead when it comes to planning and creating lenses, it’s August. Are you ready?
When you’re finished shopping for (and writing about) back to school, there still should be plenty of fun days left to enjoy (or to inspire a lens) in August. Let’s start with birthdays.
Pick a day in August to celebrate then make a lens about Family Fun Month, Peach Month, or Romance Awareness Month. The possibilities are limitless!
Plan a party (don’t forget the camera) to celebrate one of August’s unique, even wacky holidays:
Feeling inspired? Set aside an hour or so to think about, write down, and make a plan to reach your Squidoo goals for the month. Remember to include lens maintenance – are all of yours, especially seasonal lenses, up to date? A monthly road map is an important part of planning and well worth the time to create. Remember, if you don’t know where you’re headed, you probably won’t get there!

Last Friday we announced a new Amazon link limit. You can read about it here.
Today the change is being rolled out, and we’d like to address a few questions that you might have.
Q: How many Amazon links will my lenses be allowed to have?
A: 20 Amazon links.
Q: Does this include custom tracking codes and/or sidebar widgets?
A: Both custom tracking codes and sidebar widgets are included in the limit.
Q: What about existing lenses that have more than 20 links?
A: Links that exceed the 20 Amazon link limit will be hidden. In some cases, due to the conservative way our filtering system works, there could be slightly more than 20 links visible. The Score Card, however, will always encourage a strict limit of 20 Amazon links in order to meet the “Good Amazon link usage” goal.
Q: What do you mean by “hide” modules.
A: Once the limit has been reached, any additional official Squidoo Amazon modules will be entirely removed from the published version of the lens. Any additional links in other modules (e.g. the Text module) will be modified so that the “href” part of the <a> tag is removed. The content inside of the link will remain visible.
Q: What about new lenses?
A: New lenses with more than 20 links to Amazon will not be allowed to publish.
Q: How will I know if my lens has too many Amazon links?
A: A yellow Dashboard icon will indicate which lenses have too many Amazon links. In the Workshop, all Amazon links will be visible, however they will be highlighted in yellow so that they are easily distinguished. The Score Card, visible in both the published and workshop versions of the lens, indicates whether the lens has “Good Amazon link usage.”
UPDATE – We just released one bug fix. It was possible in some cases (though not the majority) for a lens with exactly 20 Amazon links to receive the dashboard warning. In those cases, publishing the lens would remove the warning. We’ve fixed the problem so that no future warnings at exactly 20 amazon links will be given.

Here’s a few of the lenses that were runner’s up in the quest challenge to get you started.
Let me introduce you to Scotland’s Via Ferrata. The Elie chain walk is an intimidating climb over a rocky shoreline whilst hanging on to chains embedded into the rock. It is the only one of its kind in Scotland and this linear walk/climb negotiates a sea c…
I’m terrified. I suggested going camping with kids. I am not a parent. I’ve spent the last 50 years being a kid myself and now I’ve volunteered my long weekend to go camping with my wife, her sister and the kids. What have I done. I grew up camping. By the…
Since we live in Hawaii, people often ask me what our family does for fun besides going to the beach, fishing, and diving. Well, our favorite winter adventure is to go play in the snow on Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for white mountain), which is about two hours fr…
One of my favorite activities is hiking, and I have the best hiking in the county right in my backyard. But I’ve been hiking there for decades, and recently I found myself wishing those old familiar woods could offer something new to look at. After all, I…
A huge thank you to all of the club members who participated either by creating a new lens or by taking the time to vote. We really appreciate you!
