sweatertree2aToday we’re happy to introduce you to badmsm. She’s our “Yarnaholic” Contributor on Squidoo.

Tell us a little bit about your niche topic.
I have always enjoyed crafts, but knitting did not click for me until I purchased my first knitting machine in 1997. It was over a year before I got up the courage to try it out. Guess I needed to be ready for all the changes that machine would bring to my life.

Tell us about the moment you fell in love with your topic. Was it an immediate thing or did it happen over time?
From the time I finished my first hat and scarf, I was gone! I had to teach myself, with the help of some very lovely people online. We are all still friends to this day.

I never realized the power of crafting to change lives for the better, until I stood in front of a class of 22 women in Uganda, East Africa in 2004. They had invited me to teach them machine knitting so they could earn an income as a women’s work cooperative. I was never so moved in my life!

Who had the most influence in your life?
I have several people who have influenced me, and we have interchanged our roles as teacher and student many times. The first are Cari Clement, former owner of Bond America and founder of Rwanda Knits, and Cheryl Brunette, former spokes person for Bond and currently a fabulous YouTube knitting instructor. I met them both through instructional videos and DVDs, now we correspond regularly online. After that, I would definitely say all of my students and knitting friends, especially in Africa. What I learned from them could fill several books.
