Lens of the Day: How to Do Real Work on Your Kindle Fire HDX Tablet

Posted: 17 Jul 2014 05:47 AM PDT

kindlefireIf you’re looking to replace your old PC or laptop, you’re going to want to read today’s Lens of the Day first.

Stop by How to Do Real Work on Your Kindle Fire HDX Tablet by lensmaster insulin-dependent to see if a tablet might be a better investment for you.

When you’re done reading, why not consider creating a new lens that shares some of your own best advice?  People are always searching for help with things and your lens might just prove to be their answer.

And just in case you missed it, we’re currently running a community lensmaking challenge for How-To lenses that share craft and hobby project ideas.  Take a look HERE.

Lens Formats & New Design

Posted: 16 Jul 2014 01:23 PM PDT

We’re in the process of unifying our lens layouts for better consistency and performance. The first step of this process is going to be released soon for some initial testing. Once this release is live, all lenses across Squidoo will share the same traditional lens layout. We’re soon going to apply a fresh new design throughout the site, and we know you’re going to love it.

This means the newer lens formats (product review, recipe and how-to) will look like traditional lenses. However, this doesn’t mean the lens formats are changing as far as content goes. All three formats will maintain their respective structure and rules.

No action is necessary on your part.

We’re making the switch now for two reasons. First, we want to test a few things before we apply the new design. Second, we want to have a consistent experience across Squidoo for better reader engagement, which is great for all of us!

We’re really excited and want to give you a sneak peek (see below).

We’ll release the new design along with the new bio page in the coming days.

Keep your eye right here on SquidooHQ for more news!

Community Lensmaking Quest: Look What I Made!

Posted: 16 Jul 2014 01:00 PM PDT

5494632378_e32b3d6020_zIf you’re a crafter or any kind of hobbyist, we’ve got a great quest for you.

To complete this quest, create a new lens that features a handmade item or project idea that you’ve completed.

Ideas might include:

  • Jewelry Making
  • A Wood Working Project
  • A Knit or Crochet Pattern
  • A Craft You Did With a Child
  • Sewing by Hand or Machine
  • Beading
  • Advice for Collecting Anything
  • Something You Built for or in your Yard
  • Or anything else you made yourself.

When you’re ready to begin, you can create a  “How To” lens for this quest using our How To format by starting your lens HERE, or just create a traditional lens and if you like, you can include one of our How To modules. See examples of all 3 types of lens below.

The How To module allows you to easily add all of the items needed and the steps necessary to complete your project.  Whether or not you use the module, be very careful to include all steps, tools or items needed to complete your project.  And do include a guestbook where folks can leave you questions in case they get stuck.

We love to see what you’ve created and so do your readers so please do share some photos of at least some of the steps and especially one of the finished product.

Take a Look!

The following 3 lenses demonstrate the differences between using our How To format, the module and what your lens can look like using a traditional lens format.

As you can see, all three methods can turn out equally as nice.  Choose whichever one you like for creating yours.  These should be just viewed as examples.  We’d love for you to get creative while making your new lens.

When your project lens is complete, please return here and post the link in the comments below so we can all see what you made.
